jul 27 2026Lonnie Walker's move to Real Madrid has become complicated. The American wing remains on the market following his stint with Maccabi Tel Aviv, but Partizan has reportedly taken the lead in the race to sign him, according to SportKlub.
Walker's profile fit well with Real Madrid's needs. The club is looking to strengthen the perimeter following Mario Hezonja's departure and needs a player who can score, bring physicality, and create off the dribble. However, it's not a straightforward operation, and now the Belgrade club has moved ahead.
Walker comes off a solid season at Maccabi Tel Aviv, where he averaged 15.2 points in EuroLeague. His future doesn't appear to lie in continuing in Israel, which has opened the door for several major European clubs.
The 27-year-old American was already on Real Madrid's radar in 2024, though he ultimately chose Zalgiris Kaunas at that time. Now he's back in play as a market opportunity, but Partizan has made a stronger move and threatens to get ahead of Pedro Martínez's squad.
Walker's NBA experience also explains the interest. He was selected 18th overall in the 2018 Draft and has played 361 games in the American league with the San Antonio Spurs, Los Angeles Lakers, Brooklyn Nets, and Philadelphia 76ers.
For Real Madrid, it would be an impactful offensive signing. For Partizan, a high-level piece to strengthen the perimeter. For now, the player has been offered to both clubs, but the race no longer appears even: Belgrade is in a better position.
