Pragmatic Barcelona Defeats Maccabi 90-87

Barcelona secured a hard-fought victory over Maccabi Tel Aviv 90-87. It wasn't perhaps the most brilliant performance from Alexander Sekulic's side, but it was pragmatic. The Blaugrana knew how to win against a tough opponent, a result that should help them grow as a team. Kevin Punter (19 points) led Barcelona's offense, crucial in sealing their third EuroLeague victory.

The game started slowly. Both teams were finding their rhythm in a long exchange of baskets. Kevin Punter's five points for the home side and Iffe Lundberg's six points for the Israeli team were the most notable moments in these opening stages (14-14 at the 5-minute mark).

The game remained without a clear leader. Maccabi's good three-point shooting (5 of 11) and baskets from Bonzie Colson and Daniel Theis (both with five points), left the Tel Aviv side up by one at the end of the first quarter (23-24 at the 10-minute mark). Barcelona lacked ball movement and Kevin Punter (7 points) was carrying the offensive load for the Blaugrana.

The second quarter continued with the same dynamic as the first. Oded Kattash's team's rebounding advantage (14 rebounds to 8), especially with six offensive boards, kept them ahead with a slim lead (32-33 at the 15-minute mark).

Past the midpoint of this second period, errors began piling up. There was no way for the game to flow smoothly. Alexander Sekulic shuffled his pieces frequently looking for a change in his team, but it wasn't working. A three-pointer from Bonzie Colson (8 points) with 20 seconds left before halftime left the score at 40-42 for the visiting team. Barcelona had to improve their performance or they wouldn't take this game.

The second-half start had a clear Barcelona color. With an 8-0 run capped by a three-pointer from Joel Parra, Barcelona took the lead (48-42 at the 22-minute mark). However, the joy was short-lived for the home crowd. Eight consecutive points from Yan Madar (14 points), including two three-pointers, put Maccabi back in front (50-52 at the 24-minute mark).

The game remained a grind for both sides. A very sluggish contest in which both teams weren't having a good day shooting. The grit of Agustín Ubal combined with a buzzer-beater from Joel Parra (8 points) left Barcelona up three at the end of the third quarter (67-64 at the 30-minute mark).

What the game lacked in brilliance it made up for in excitement. A three-pointer from Kevin Punter (16 points) put Sekulic's team up six (74-68 at the 32-minute mark), which seemed like a comfortable margin given how the game had gone.

Barcelona maintained the initiative on the scoreboard, but Israeli Yan Madar (20 points) wasn't done yet. Thanks to his points, the Blaugrana couldn't close out the game (83-80 at the 38-minute mark). To add more drama, two free throws from Lundberg with 51 seconds remaining put Maccabi within one (85-84). Nobody in the Palau moved from their seat.

On the next possession came the quick reply from Kevin Punter, but a foul from Joel Parra on Lundberg gave him three free throws and Maccabi tied the game (87-87). That's when Justin Robinson (11 points) had his moment. A three-pointer with 2 seconds left to play sealed Barcelona's 90-87 victory, sending the Palau into a frenzy. An important win for Sekulic's side as they continue to grow as a team.
