Spurs Have Built a Future Core That's Almost Impossible to Believe Through the Draft
Sometimes a list of names explains a project better than any lengthy analysis, and what the San Antonio Spurs have done in the Draft, viewed with some perspective, is starting to look absolutely insane.
In 2019 they selected Keldon Johnson with the 29th pick. A year later, in 2020, Devin Vassell arrived with the 11th pick. In 2023 everything changed with Victor Wembanyama, the 1st overall pick and the player around whom the franchise's entire future now revolves.
But the strong part is that it didn't stop there. In 2024 they added Stephon Castle with the 4th pick. And in 2025 they struck hard again with Dylan Harper, selected 2nd overall, and Carter Bryant, chosen with the 14th pick.
In just a few years, San Antonio has assembled via the Draft Keldon Johnson, Devin Vassell, Victor Wembanyama, Stephon Castle, Dylan Harper, and Carter Bryant. Young talent, athleticism, room for growth, and a pretty clear feeling: the Spurs haven't rebuilt halfway. They've been accumulating pieces until forming something that, on paper, is scary.
Said that way, it almost sounds exaggerated. But you only have to look at the sequence of picks to understand it: this is absolutely crazy.
