When his team had its back to the wall and needed someone to stand tall, Reggie Redding of ALBA Berlin rose to the challenge. Redding starred as short-handed ALBA fueled its playoff hopes with an 80-72 victory over visiting Zalgiris Kaunas on Wednesday. His dominant 27-point performance also netted Redding Top 16 Round 9 bwin MVP honors. Redding also collected 7 rebounds, dished 5 assists and was an effective shooter, making 6 of 11 two-point shots, both of his three-point attempts and shooting 9 of 10 from the foul line in amassing a performance index rating of 36, which was the highest of any player in Top 16 Round 9. His scoring output was ALBA’s most in a Euroleague game in more than a decade. Redding also became ALBA’s first weekly MVP winner since Immanuel McElroy won the award in Round 9 of the 2008-09 regular season
The second-highest index of the round was 32 by Crvena Zvezda Telekom Belgrade center Boban Marjanovic, who paced his team to an 89-76 victory over reigning Euroleague champion Maccabi Electra Tel Aviv with 19 points and 17 rebounds. Marjanovic recorded the second-highest index rating in the league for the third time in four week. Laboral Kutxa Vitoria guard Darius Adams had the third-best index for the week. He poured in 31 points and tallied an index rating of 30 in his team’s 74-81 loss to CSKA Moscow. Rounding out the week’s top performances were Unicaja Malaga guard Ryan Toolson and EA7 Emporio Armani Milan swingman Alessandro Gentile, each with index ratings of 28. Toolson, who also hit the game-winning three in his team’s 93-90 victory over Anadolu Efes, finished with 25 points and made all 10 of his foul shots. Gentile scored 24 points and drew 10 fouls in a 74-83 home loss at the hands of Olympiacos Piraeus.
Individual leaders: Boban Marjanovic of Crvena Zvezda Telekom Belgrade, 17 rebounds
Darius Adams’s 31 points were the most seen on a Euroleague court in Top 16 Round 9. He became just the second player to break the 30-point barrier in the Top 16 this season. Nizhny Novgorod guard Taylor Rochestie remains the league’s top scorer with 19.4 points per game and the Top 16 leader at 18.9 per game. Boban Marjanovic’s 17 rebounds were not only the most in the round, but the most in the Top 16 in three seasons. Marjanovic also tied his own output from Round 6 of the regular season for the most rebounds in a game this season. Marjanovic is this season’s rebounding leader with 10.4 per game. He is tied with Nemanja Bjelica of Fenerbahce Ulker for the Top 16 lead with 10.1 rebounds per game. Yogev Ohayon of Maccabi Electra, Alex Renfroe of ALBA Berlin, Vassilis Spanoulis of Olympiacos Piraeus and Milos Teodosic of CSKA Moscow shared the top spot in the round in assists with 8. Teodosic remains the league leader with 7.1 assists per game this season. He is also the Top 16 leader with 6.4 assists per game. No one in Top 16 Round 9 recorded more steals than Renfroe with 4. CSKA guard Nando De Colo is averaging 2 steals per game to lead all Top 16 players, while Dinamo Banco di Sardegna Sassari guard David Logan’s 2.3 steals per game remain the most in the league for the full season. Laboral Kutxa center Mirza Begic rejected 5 shots on Thursday to lead all Top 16 Round 9 players. He also vaulted to second place on the Euroleague’s all-time list with 157 career blocks. With 1.92 blocks per game, Begic is second to Nizhny center Art Parakhouski (2.06 bpg.) for blocks this season. Parakhouski is also the Top 16 blocks leader with 2.5 per game. The only two Top 16 Round 9 double doubles belonged to Marjanovic, who recorded his fifth consecutive double double and 12th of the season, and Trey Thompkins (22 points, 11 rebounds) of Nizhny.
