Aleksander Sekulic will be Barcelona's new basketball head coach. FC Barcelona and Sekulic have reached an agreement for the incorporation of the Slovenian coach as the new leader of the Blaugrana bench. The 48-year-old coach will sign a contract through June 30, 2028, and will become the first Slovenian head coach in Barcelona basketball history.
In the coming days, the official signing ceremony and presentation of the new Blaugrana head coach will take place.
He will join the Club after coaching Dubai BC during the final months of last season. With the Emirates team, he made his EuroLeague debut as a head coach in the last regular season game against Valencia Basket and has led the club to win the ABA League championship for the first time in the organization's history, after defeating Partizan Belgrade in the fourth game of the finals.
A long coaching career
Sekulic began his coaching career at different clubs in his native country, with extensive experience combining the roles of assistant coach and head coach. In the 2021/22 season, he took over ERA Nymburk in the Czech Republic, with which he won the league championship. In 2022, he made the jump to Russia, where he coached Lokomotiv Kuban for two seasons (2022-24). In the 2025/26 season, he took charge of Zenit Saint Petersburg, until he packed his bags to move to Dubai last April.
Experience and success as national team coach
The new Blaugrana head coach is the current coach of the Slovenia national team, a position he has held since 2020. Leading the national team, Sekulic secured a spot to compete in the Olympic Games for the first time in the country's history, finishing his run in Tokyo in the semifinals and in a respectable fourth place in the summer of 2021. Previously, as an assistant coach for his country, he also won the EuroBasket championship in 2017.
