Lakers Target Jonathan Kuminga to Build Around Luka Dončić

The Los Angeles Lakers continue to move in the market with a clear objective: finding pieces that fit around Luka Dončić. In that scenario, Jonathan Kuminga's name has emerged as a player who, according to Evan Sidery, is highly regarded by the Los Angeles franchise.

The interest makes considerable sense. Kuminga doesn't arrive at his peak value, but precisely that could turn him into an interesting opportunity. At 23 years old, the small forward still maintains significant room for growth and physical attributes that are not abundant in the NBA: power, size, court-running ability, and defensive versatility.

His departure from the Golden State Warriors seemed to close a complicated chapter, marked by lack of playing time and a role that never quite solidified. However, his stint with the Atlanta Hawks showed positive signs again. There he regained confidence, displayed more aggression attacking the rim, and once again showed that profile of a player capable of making an impact without always needing the ball in his hands.

For a Lakers team built around Dončić, that quality could be key. The Slovenian constantly creates advantages, draws defensive help, and forces defenses to collapse on him. In that context, a player like Kuminga can exploit spaces, run in transition, cut to the basket, and punish opponents near the rim.

Additionally, his arrival would also help address one of the team's major needs: perimeter defense. Kuminga can defend multiple positions, match up with physical wings, and provide energy on the perimeter—something fundamental to balance a roster that needs to protect Dončić more on that side of the floor.

The Lakers are seeking young, athletic players who are useful on both sides of the court. Kuminga fits that mold. It wouldn't be a risk-free signing, but rather a move that makes a lot of sense if the goal is to surround Luka with pieces capable of running, defending, and finishing plays without monopolizing the ball.
